TEAM CLEAN TAS
AN EPIC MISSION TO CLEAN UP TASSIE'S MOST REMOTE BEACHES
Published 02|2025
An epic mission to clean up some of Tassie’s most remote beaches has just begun! Last year, our friends over at @teamcleantas collected a huge 55,000+ pieces of plastic & marine debris (by hand!) from Tasmania’s southwest coastline. An annual mission that’s been running for the past 25 years and we’d love you to join us in supporting them.
An epic expedition via fishing boat, where even though this coastline is protected in Tasmania’s World Heritage Area, every single day, thousands of pieces of plastic are washing up on the shore. This puts both ancient cultural living sites at risk, as well as the lives of animals, both in and out of the ocean.
“What started as a gentle walk along the beach through the steep sharp rocks soon descended into a slow crawl on all fours picking up thousands of small plastic pieces. The density of the plastic meant it took the crew of 11 over 2 hours to move 100 metres along the face and base of large dune south of a tannin stained creek..” Mat from @teamcleantas
Each piece is then counted, categorised and recorded. “The count took well over three hours with a record 898 nurdles amongst the 15,646 items counted. Over 12,000 of these items were plastic pieces, along with over 1000 pieces of rope, 484 bottle caps and 196 bait straps.” Mat.
The Team Clean team is made up of volunteers and these areas are only accessible via sea by fishing boats, piloted by some of Tasmania’s finest and most highly-skilled skippers, who volunteer their time to make sure the team gets ashore safely.
